Investing in Futures: Historically Independent

Every year, the Jewish calendar creates a remarkable journey. It begins with Passover, when we celebrate freedom from slavery in Egypt. We retell the story of our people who stood at the sea, saw no clear path forward, and then watched the waters open. The message of Passover does not lie in the past. It is about those moments in life when the next step seems impossible, until courage, faith, and action reveal a way through.
Just weeks later, that journey feels strikingly modern in Israel as the country erupts in the joy of Yom HaAtzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day. The tiny country of Israel stands as testament to a modern-day miracle which is renewed each day.
To experience Yom HaAtzmaut in Israel is unlike anything else in the Jewish world. The streets fill with music, flags, dancing, concerts, barbecues, fireworks, and celebrations in every city and neighborhood. Families gather in parks. Friends and strangers sing and dance in the streets. Public spaces become filled with pride and gratitude. In synagogues, festive prayers of thanks are recited, Hallel is sung, and communities gather to celebrate the gift of Jewish sovereignty with joy and gratitude. The entire country pulses with energy.

It’s not just a party, it is the celebration of Jewish independence restored after two thousand years. It is the modern continuation of the freedom first remembered on Passover. We celebrate what freedom looks like when a people rebuilds its home, rejuvenates its language, and shapes its own future.
Choosing to study in Israel is itself an act of independence. It means stepping beyond what is expected, making a courageous choice about your future, and taking ownership of your next chapter. But real freedom is never only individual. Your personal path becomes intertwined with the larger path of the Jewish people, their history, their future, and their return home.
Sometimes the decision to study abroad can feel like standing at your own sea. There may be uncertainty, hesitation, practical concerns, or the feeling that there is no clear way forward. Yet often, once you take the first brave step, a path opens that you could not see before. That is how many meaningful journeys begin. As the country celebrates national independence, many students realize they are celebrating something personal as well: the freedom to choose a meaningful path while becoming part of something larger than themselves.

College should be a time of discovery, courage, and meaningful decisions. Studying in Israel during this season reminds you that freedom is not only something remembered from the past. It is something you build through the choices you make now. This year, as Israel celebrates Yom HaAtzmaut, imagine yourself here, surrounded by music, joy, prayer, and possibility, taking part in the story and shaping your own next chapter.
